Feedback: ATI Usability Feedback: This is your opportunity to provide us with feedback that will help improve software and driver usability
ATI is one of the first graphic providers to make a 64-bit driver that supports the Longhorn Display Driver Model (LDDM) – the Microsoft Vista revolutionary graphic driver standard – as well as the first to provide LDDM drivers for integrated graphics processors. By making LDDM drivers available more than a full year prior to Windows Vista release, ATI provides developers with a stable, feature-enabled and performance-optimized platform for application development. ATI is also the first to provide Catalyst® Windows Vista driver feedback via our Catalyst® Crew Feedback program.

I'm having trouble installing the Catalyst Vista 5308 drivers. I am following the directions in the install notes, but when it tries to install, the installer just waits forever until I cancel out of it (the installer UI is still responsive). My Radeon 9550 256MB card seems to had default drivers installed by build 5308, so I already do get the Aero Glass effects, but I'd like to test ATI's drivers.
Anyone suffering from the same problem?
If there are any .INF files, try right clicking on them and selecting "Install". I had a trouble with some drivers of a previous build, and this did the trick for me :o)

If you have the vista ATI drivers installed then the ATI drivers will not install. You must set it as VGA drivers.

Thanks! I'll try that out (though I dread seeing Vista in VGA mode, even for a little while :-) )

So, I tried what you suggested last night and now I'm in worse shape than before. I set the driver to VGA and attempted to install the new ATI beta catalyst drivers for Vista, and it still gave the same problem. I then booted into safe mode and attempted it, and attempting the driver installation gave me a slightly different error - it said there's an error adding the drivers to the driver store.
Finally, after giving up on the beta Catalyst Vista drivers, I found that I couldn't get Vista back to my original config. The built-in Radeon Vista drivers are no longer there! So, at this point, I'm stuck in VGA mode :-(
Am I just out of luck or is any of this a known problem to ATI and/or MS?
-Kevin

For some very odd reason, it didnt allow me to install it. It would just hang.
I found it to be a bit 'dodgy' getting it installed. I needed to follow the install instructions pretty closely (not to the letter, they're not 100% accurate) to get the drivers installed. Once in however they don't appear to be any better/worse than the defaults.

Are you posting through this portal?
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx
FYI We think that there is an error in the link provided for its Printing, Faxing, & Scanning menu item.
E.g. instead of posting in the IE General newsgroup as you are now you would be better off posting in a Vista specific newsgroup. There is a Vista specific newsgroup for that topic but unfortunately it can not be accessed through the above portal.
Here is an excerpt from a recent post which may help you find an alternative newsgroup in which to post printer issues more effectively.
In case it helps I will crosspost my reply to the Vista Hardware NG which you will be able to switch to by using the link in the headers of my reply.
<excerpt>
The first one, "Printing Faxing & Scanning" is just obviously wrong. It could be going here instead: microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan Even if that didn't exist I think microsoft.public.windows.vista.hardware_devices would have made more sense than pointing them at the IE NG.
Unfortunately the provided portal isn't aware of that first newsgroup so you would either have to use NNTP (e.g. for your spiffy new Windows Mail app enter in an IE Address bar: news://msnews.microsoft.com/ and then type: c.w vist to see all the Vista newsgroups)
or find a different portal which does include the others, such as this one:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx
then open the menu tree at: [English] [Windows] [Windows Vista]
I think that using (or at least being aware of) that menu tree would give Vista users a better perspective about where they are posting and how their posts might be received, particularly if they aren't clear about identifying their context when posting to common newsgroups.

I waited for the 'new hardware found' box to appear and then selected for Vista to search (i wasn't connected to the web). At this stage i put the Logitech CD into the CD-ROM. Vista did it's search and then started installing the drivers.

Thanks a bunch, these are great suggestions. I am thinking it may be an overheating issue, because Vista is just working my laptop a lot harder than XP did, but I am not certain. I will try each of your suggestions and post back if I figure it out.

I'd look for overheating, poor connectors (power, IDE or SATA cable). Chkdsk and defrag might also help - the heads might be in a sort of loop cause of corrupted or overly fragmented files or file table. Some drives spin down on idle - this one might be trying. If you have files that you need to backup/save, make sure you do that first. Michael

After installing Vista RC1, I noticed my hard drive is making audible high pitched noises. The pattern of the noise is 1 second steady beep-like noise, then maybe .1 second silence. When I create disk activity, the noise alters or disappears. I did not have this noise when running Windows XP. I have a Dell Latitude D810 with a Pentium M 1.73 and 1 GB RAM.
It is possible that it isn't the hard drive making the noise, but seems like the most likely culprit.
Any ideas?

Hey Mike,
Yes this is the same exact problem that I am having. The problem is that Vista is sharing out video memory resources that should only be assigned to the onboard video card. The sharing\conflict is occuring with the PCI to PCI bridge. I had to reload XP but I plan to put Vista up as a second OS again soon. If you come across any fixes let me know.

Heres the resolution for all of u which are usin 64-bit Windows Vista. This was tested on RC1 (5600) and (5728) as i see everyone is havin problems with creative card and unsigned drivers which cant be installed under 64bit Vista. In previous build it was easier to install unsigned drivers. With prompt command and complete termination of driver signs check "bcdedit /set nointegritychecks on" and or press F8 and Disable signed driver enforcment on startup @ boot up menu of Vista. You can try this and it will maybe work for u. Dont forget to restart after usin command promopt command. If u dont want bother with this go to creative webpage. As u know 64bit vista is little bit like XP 64bit. If u use download drivers from creative ,that webpage is check your system and as you can see is gettin info that its Win XP-64bit version. So just download Win XP 64bit drivers and install them. They're signed so you even dont have to F8 every startup etc. This should work even with X-fi cards.

You have the clue right there. Whatever card you have on the mobo in pci slot 2 is hanging things up. Pull that card and see what happens. Try switching it to different slots. I usually use the top slot or drop it down to the last pci slot to see if the board can redetect it, thus allowing Vista to communicate with the device correctly. Since you told the BIOS to configure the mobo it is having trouble with that one device.

hi again. I am running windows live mail desktop beta from within vista now, and have been up and running for about 20 minutes now, my longest period of time using vista ever without a reboot.
the errors in event log that I had were as follows: Usbperf data collection failed. Collect function called with usupported Query Type.
IRQARB: ACPI BIOS does not contain an IRQ for the device in PCI slot 2, function 0. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.
on account of these errors I did 2 things: I unplugged all unnecessary usb devices attached to my system (there were several that I forgot to unplug and completely forgot about), and I went into bios and selected yes for "plug and play aware OS". I am not sure if the second one helped, but it sure looks like you were right about the extra peripherals causing errors. thanks again rox for your support, and now I can finally experience vista!

hi all. i am running the latest vista, built 5728 RC1, i believe, on my asus a8r32 mvp-deluxe motherboard. i am a fully supporting, registered vista user with a valid product key. I would like to try out lots of the new features in this build, but every 5 minutes or so, my system gets the blue screen error and has to reboot. this happens no matter what i do. if i let it just sit there, it does the same thing. it seems to be about every 5 or 10 minutes. one night i let my pc on while i slept, and apparently it rebooted and rebooted all night long. i have every possible update that i could find for my motherboard and video card and all that. my specs are : 2 gig samsung ddr 400 ram, amd x2 dual core 4400+ 939 pin, ati x1600xt pci-e 256mb ddr3 video card, onboard alc882 HD audio, one wd 80 gig ide drive, one 300 gig ide drive, one sata - I drive 120 gig - this is the one windows runs of off. and i also have a sata - II drive, but windows is not installed on it. any other questions about my system or setup please ask, as i really want to get vista up and running! thanks, nate.
p.s. i AM able to boot into vista, and i can run just about anything i could in XP with no problems. the issue is how to keep vista from rebooting after 5 or 10 minutes. if this was a sata issue, wouldn't vista fail to install, as i saw in other threads?
What brand of drive is it? More info please...

There are people here who can help you with "uninstalling" Vista, but they will need to know more about where you are, and where you are trying to go.
First how did you install Vista? Was your installation of Vista successful, or did it fail?
Did you upgrade Windows XP or a previous version of Vista?
If so, do you have data that you need to save?
Did you do a clean install of Vista?
Do you have an image of the system you are trying to get back to (XP or previous version of Vista) ?
Do you have a restore disc?
Do you have an OEM or retail XP CD?
Did you do a dual boot installation?
If so, do you have two or more partitions on one hard drive, or two or more hard drives?

I have found the drivers for it in Vista and installed them, but find they test rather slow when I run a diagnostic. Would it be better to install the WinXP drivers for the chip? Or is that impossible or inadvisable due to the difference between Vista and XP? Video drivers seem to be such a big problem that I wonder what is being gained in Vista by changing the video system so much. I see no improvement in the video display. Much grief would have been prevented by just keeping the video system the same. I'd really like a good explanation for the change...different doesn't always mean better.

buy a video card from a store with a good return policy as many had reported that under older MB drivers the older ati cards like the x700 and x800 models did not work. subsequent updates i believe corrected this and "newer" RA models have nvidia 6600s in there.

I'm having the same problem as Matthileo (and it seems many others) are having. I tried to go to that link (http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=23&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false ) and my speakers still don't work. It says it couldn't connet to that server (ftp://202.65.194.18) I'm wondering if that computer is not online or what. Do you have any idea on how I can get that or could you email it to me or something.
Thanks!

Alright, I tried installing the Inspiron 6000 xp driver... I tried the e1505(or whatever it is) driver... I have to know if there is any kind of actual fix so that my headphone/microphone jacks work. Hello,
I have a Dell GX280 with a built-in Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family that supports two monitors. I recently installed Vista RC1 (5600) as a clean install and everything went fine.
When the desktop comes up I see a mirrored desktop on my two Dell 1709FP LCD's. When I go into the dislay properties one of my displays is listed as greyed/not attached. If I right-click and select "attached" I can then select the "extend the desktop onto this monitor" option. When I click apply nothing happens.
I have tried looking for a Vista video driver and/or Dell monitor drivers to see if that would resolve the issue. I am out of things to try. Any suggestions?
-Cheers
I too am having a similar problem. I have a HP Pavilion notebook with the Intel 82855 chipset. I would like to have my primary dispaly my Samsung SnycMaster 19" CRT with the desktop extended to the notebook lcd. However when I select this configuration it I only end up with my LCD being the primary. I have even gone as far as to try to install the old XP drivers that allowed me to do this but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I would really like to try that, but I am afraid I don't know how to edit the registry key. Would you be able to tell me?

I found this in another post and it worked for me. Neither my DVD writer nor my CDR worked after updating RC1...I went and edited the registry key listed, rebooted, and it worked!!!!

My CD & DVD drives quit working. When I insert a CD, Autorun does not work, nor is Explorer able to access the drives. I check the Device Manager and it did not show that there were any problems with the drives.
Any Suggestions?
Thanks so much for that suggestion! I went to the Epson website and downloaded the 64-bit Windows XP driver and it is actually coming up in Photo too. The ink level shows too. I am using the 64-bit version of Vista

Has anyone tried the R220 drivers. My R220 works great. With My HP 450 I tried about 6 different drivers and got it to print but the quality sucked I will keep trying others till I find the right one. My R220 installed with the XP drivers and even the Print CD works. Dont give up. If you find a driver post it and maybe you can help others with the same problem.

When vista asks you for the drivers, try specifying C:\Windows (or where you installed vista) with the subfolders option enabled.

Hi, I'm have a Soundblaster Live 5.1 that worked with Vista Beta 2, however since installing RC 1 I have no sound, I've tried all the solutions I could find online, does anyone have any other suggestions.
Barring that I would like to know if anyone can tell me a reasonably inexpensive sound card that works trouble free with Vista
<snip>
I was only able to fix things, when I restored my system back to very 1st restore point after initial install. I then switched to vga-driver, deleted each and every ati file from my Vista install. Then I intalled radeon XP drivers and everything started to work.
I can get the resolutions to work like this unfortunately, I can only get
media center to run about 15 min. before BSOD. I get a BSOD when running other games like Nancy Drew with Direct X after some time as well. The Beta for this sytem was more stable. I just keep waiting for an update.

Hi . I have a question regarding my ATI Radeon X800XT resolution: In WinXP I can get 1920 X 1200 @ 32 bits, but in Win Vista RC1 5728 ( as it was in previuos builts) I can only reach 1920 X 1080. This is the maximum resolution I got either with the built-in drivers or with the ATI Vista RC1 drivers. My monitor is a BenQ 23" FP231W, and it's drivers are properly installed and the monitor recognized. Thanks Jos
